Day 2: more beaches

Today we went to the opposite side of the cape to the Cape Cod Bay. We left early in order to be there for low tide so we could walk on the Tidal Flats. It was a cool morning and a bit overcast. We took a turn that brought us to homes right along the water front. We couldn't believe the amount of sand they had in the FRONT of their homes.

So much they have to use these to move the sand and then go dump it on the beach down the road.
Allison was a bit hesitant to go to another beach, but soon found she loved this one.

At low tide we were told you could walk almost a mile out on the tidal flats.

We started our walk. We had a few spots of water to wade through, but when we got to the main part of the water we had such a fun time seeing what sea life we could find.

David found sand dollars, hermit crabs and...

this! A huge clam. David noticed a small hole in the ground and we started digging. He was so excited when we pulled it out and water squirted out. He made sure that we put it back in the way we found it and cover it up so the birds couldn't get to it.

We were fascinated with the ridges the waves had left

and loved running on the smooth parts seeing who could make the coolest feet prints.

Bridget was a trooper trying to stay warm and enjoy it too.

We came back later in the afternoon to see the difference of high and low tide. Can you tell?

After the beach we went to the second highest spot on the cape, Scargo Tower.

The few from the tower was beautiful. Cape Cod has something like 350 lakes. The one below the tower is the only one shaped like a fish. The lakes are mainly fresh water too. With so many lakes, marshes and wetlands it is no wonder cranberry bogs were everywhere.
The tower
The homes seemed so weird and drab to me. I loved the front of this yellow one, but
the sides of the homes were the plain cedar shakes that gray with age. This is the traditional style of homes on the cape. Only the fronts have color. The first homes were all cedar and the rich had clapboard fronts they could paint. It has continued to stay the same. It was something I couldn't get use to.
After lunch, stopping back by the beach and going to an old fashioned general store, we headed back to the hotel, just in time for the rain and a quick nap for the kids. The afternoon left some time for swimming too.

Did you go to the cranberry bogs? Love the sleeping picture! Looks like you ran them ragged! Too funny!
